The science behind BioSURE PRO Protective Nasal Spray and why it really does work

SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, has spread across 229 countries with a total of almost 673 million cases since it was first detected at the end of 2019 in Wuhan, China[1] (World Health Organization, 2023).

COVID-19, and other respiratory viruses, can be transmitted between people through direct, indirect (via contaminated objects or surfaces) or close contact with infected people via airborne respiratory droplets[2] (European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, 2022). Although vaccines have been developed in response to the SARS pandemic, researchers globally are now seeking additional methods to prevent the coronavirus infections, alongside the pre-existing common colds and flu viruses. “Safe antiviral products for the prevention of respiratory airborne viruses may be the most effective methods of protection”[3] (Jimenez, D., 2021) (Nocini, R., et al., 2022).

Enter, stage left, BioSURE PRO Protective Nasal Spray. It’s unique, patented formula has been developed specifically to help prevent infections and contains a combination of safe ingredients that have been clinically proven to be effective at blocking respiratory viruses in the nasopharynx. The spray works by delivering a fine mist plume that coats the nasal cavity membrane, almost instantly forming a physical but invisible barrier that enhances the body’s natural defence mechanism. As the virus takes hold and begins to develop in the nasal passages, the BioSURE PRO formulation is able to block and even inactivate the virus to help naturally reduce the risk of infection.

There are several nasal sprays on the market that claim to reduce the duration of cold and flu infections, but this means only being reactive after infection. We believe that preventing infections by blocking the viral attachment in the nasopharynx is preferable to experiencing symptoms in the first place.

There are three key features of BioSURE PRO Protective Nasal Spray that differentiate it from competitor products and the evidence supports the conclusion that the sum of the product’s features makes it the most effective, safe and convenient for our users.

  • 1. Consistent dose volume creating a micro-class droplet size

BioSURE PRO’s pump mechanism that distributes the spray was evaluated by the US National Institute of Health’s Nanocharacterization Laboratory (NCL). The physiochemical and physiokinetic reports[4] document in detail, the safety profile and physical delivery of the nasal spray. In the studies, a droplet diameter distribution analysis was performed which demonstrated that the average droplet size was 14.7nm. This ultra-fine mist creates a more uniform coating on the nasal cell membrane, providing better coverage. As a pump spray that applies a plume of spray, versus the squeeze-bottle found in several competitors that applies as a squirt, our dosing is not dependent upon the user’s ability to consistently squeeze with the same strength. This combination of consistent application and ultra-fine mist plume coverage is a critical component of BioSURE PRO Protective Nasal Spray’s efficacy.

  • 2. Patented cationic surfactant

Another key unique feature of  BioSURE PRO is the microemulsion formulation which enjoys patent protection due to the chemical characteristics of Ethyl Lauroyl Arginate Hydrochloride (ELAH), its primary component. ELAH has been safely used in mouthwashes for decades to block bacterial growth and is generally recognised as a safe and effective antiviral agent. The microemulsion composition comprising of a cationic antiviral agent (ELAH), a copper salt and water has been shown to have a remarkably strong antiviral activity, especially when applied to the main sites of infection – the nasal cavities.

ELAH is a cationic surfactant with a broad spectrum of activity against pathogens and other bacteria, yeast and moulds. Cationic surfactants are useful in the protection against viral infections. ELAH exerts its viral blocking effect by interfering with the physical interactions between the virus particles and the cells’ surfaces – it creates a positive charge in the barrier layer which attracts viruses, whilst the surfactant quality inactivates the virus, blocking its ability to penetrate the cells and replicate.

  • 3. Durable physical barrier

Some competitor products provide point-in-time protection, trapping and removing the virus present in the nose. BioSURE PRO’s barrier has been demonstrated to last beyond 6 hours. We believe that in the real world, 6 hours is a reasonable reapplication time for users. More frequently, and the user may feel like they are constantly reapplying, and less frequently, the protective effect will begin to fade.

ELAH has no chemical or pharmacological effect. It does not enter the bloodstream, but rather, is completely broken down in the body and metabolised safely into arginine and lauric acid which are naturally found in the human body (Nanotechnology Characterization Laboratory, 2021).

Dr Abdul Gaffar, the inventor of the unique formula containing ELAH, is very clear of how the protective nasal spray can sit alongside other current measures, including vaccines, “when the virus gets into the nasal passages, it starts replicating very fast and when it replicates and reaches certain levels, it is able to move to other areas of the body, especially the lungs, where it creates havoc. We want to interrupt and disrupt that process.”

Unlike medicines that help to relieve symptoms, BioSUREÒ PRO Protective Nasal Spray is drug free and is clinically proven to be effective against a range of respiratory airborne viruses, including COVID-19, the flu and common colds. In vitro studies with an rVSV-SARS-CoV-2 model proved that the virus is 99.99% inhibited at low concentrations. In vivo studies using the same model that Pfizer and Moderna used for vaccine development, demonstrated that COVID-19 is 99.99% inactivated with no adverse events found following administration of the unique BioSUREÒ PRO Protective Nasal Spray formulation. A pharmacokinetics study was conducted with the National Cancer Institute and found no harmful effects to the nasal passage (Stern, S. et al., 2021). Studies also evidenced no risk of overdose, do development of dependencies and no degradation of efficacy with prolonged continuous use.

The conclusion - BioSURE PRO Protective Nasal Spray offers a unique, safe and effective way to add an extra layer of protection against infection by airborne viruses and is safe for daily use.
